Elemental

In geological terms Iceland is very young and the landscape is alive with the restless play of nature’s forces. Iceland has the largest glaciers in Europe – in fact, 11% of the country is covered by glaciers. The coastline is dotted with more than one hundred fjords and green, fertile valleys extend from many of them.

Iceland also has more than 10,000 waterfalls and countless hot springs. A lot of the country is technically uninhabitable, with the moss-covered rocks of ancient lava flows and tall treeless mountains, but these moonscapes are perfect for exploring an other-worldly looking place.

Fight, Fear, Hope and Faith. Pakistan
Pakistan, a country of 173 million people that encompasses dusty plains, sublime mountain peaks and some of the world’s most densely populated cities, has rarely been a placid place since it became an independent nation in 1947.

The February elections brought Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party, headed by her widower, Zardari, to power and a brief hiatus in the violence.

But the new governing coalition collapsed over petty power struggles, and the militancy resumed. Twenty-nine suicide bombings have claimed more than 400 lives so far this year.

Pakistan is in crisis.

Islamic extremism has metastasized from the lawless tribal areas on the border with Afghanistan to Pakistan’s cities one of the most conflict-plagued regions in the world.

Yet though Pakistan has been a victim of terrorism, it has also been its enabler.

Memories for Sale

I have been always fascinated by metaphysical nature of the candid photography. The combination of light, form and subject transforms into something new on the flat surface of a photographic print and the result is often unpredictable. The quest for a successful shot becomes an adventure by itself. On the other hand still life images are produced mostly in a highly controlled environment where a photographer defines all the parameters of the composition and light. I decided to try to fuse these two disciplines together.

The theme for the series was suggested during one my photo sessions at antiques market. While walking between vendors offering fragments of the past I saw a face of a beautiful woman looking at me from the wilted old photograph. It was uncomfortably inappropriate for somebody’s memories to be for sale and to be traded the same way as the rest of the antique merchandise. I was deeply touched and decided to offer a new life for those sold memories.
Since then the boundaries of the main theme blurred a bit, I included some objects with the faces from the past, but the idea remained the same – candid still life portrait photographs in which almost nothing is under control except for the frame composition.

Memories for Sale from Kirill Surov is now online. Enjoy!

Chinese Sentiment

After leaving China for almost a decade, going back to photograph China has been an emotional process of integrating my retrieved memories and my desire of seeking.
My passion for this on-going project is to observe and rediscover the affecting moments in Chinese daily life, both in the private and in the public.

Chinese Sentiment is a personal journey for me to reconnect with the authentic Chinese life and culture.

I intend to look pass the materialistic surface and the political phenomenon, pay appreciation to the concinnity in China; finding the poetic tradition, the romantic serenity, and the inherent beauty of China. My goal is to reveal China from a personal perspective, let the audience experience China internally and see the realness of China.

How can photographers protect themselves better when showing their work on the Internet/flickr? Or do we just have to life with it?

Check out his flickr account “a bout de souffle” >link here< (or these other accounts of him >link< >link< ) whether he also uses a photo you made.
